COVID-19 Antibody Testing

Some notable information

What is COVID-19 Antibody Testing?

It is a screening test for patients who do not feel sick and do not have COVID-19 symptoms.  It is a Serological Antibody test that indicates if your body has produced Antibodies as a response to COVID-19 exposure.

How and where is the sample collected?

The test uses a routine venipuncture sample (blood drawn from your arm) not blood from a fingerstick or any nasal/throat swab.  It can be collected at any IML Patient Service Center or your physician's office.

Which Antibody Test is it?

Specimens are tested using the Roche Diagnostics, Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S test.

It is a new semi-quantitative test for antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein and was used in the Moderna vaccine trials.

The test is authorized for use exclusively in high complexity laboratories like ours by FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).  Fact sheets for Healthcare Providers and Patients are linked below.  For even more technical details, the IFU is available also.

What about the Vaccine?

Vaccine administration is not part of our service.  However the new Roche Elecsys SARS-CoV-2 S test was utilized in the clinical trials for the Moderna Vaccine.  For more information, see the News Release below.

What if I'm not close to an IML Patient Service Center?

If necessary, specimens for COVID Antibody testing can potentially be collected elsewhere and shipped to IML for testing.  For more information about testing options for patients outside of our service area, please email COVIDinfo@internationalmedicallab.com.
